A Life Changing Experience

After I retired in 2021, I discovered the CASA Program. After completing all of the required training, I began working as an advocate for children of all ages. It has been a life-changing experience for me as well as the kiddos I support.

My time volunteering as a CASA has provided me with a renewed sense of purpose. However, the best part of the work is providing a foster child a sense of constancy and emotional stability during an otherwise traumatic time in their life. While it can be challenging at times, it is richly rewarding.

I’ve been with my current case for over two years. When we met, she was an angry adolescent who had been in the system for 11 years. She was understandably guarded, and it took some time, but she eventually started reaching out when she needed someone to listen and offer emotional and/or pragmatic support. Since then, I’ve walked alongside her, every step of the way, as she’s navigated all sorts of personal challenges, including mental health obstacles. Nevertheless, with guidance, encouragement, and consistent open-hearted communication, she has made significant process. She began taking full advantage of the resources available to her and has grown into a responsible young woman who is about to age out of the system. Her progress has, quite frankly, been astonishing!

It’s remarkable working in cooperation with others and witnessing how – when all parties work together – the CASA program can not only save but benefit a child in need.
